Seeking postwar uses for elite forces

When Adm. Bill McRaven sat down in front of the House Armed Services Committee on March 6, the chief of U.S. Special Operations Command found himself in the enviable position of describing to lawmakers the plan to disperse his 70,000 operators to other combatant commands once they're no longer needed in Afghanistan.

About 85 percent of all special operations forces are now deployed in the U.S. Central Command area of operations, fighting in and around places like Afghanistan and Yemen, McRaven said.
